Miami has earned itself a pretty epic reputation as a party city like no other. That being said, there’s so much more to it; with heaps of fun things to do in Miami dotted all across the city.

Over the years, we’ve visited Miami quite a few times; and love it. With Miami’s iconic beaches, Art Deco architecture and foodie influences from Cuba and beyond it’s a city that’s perfect for a long weekend vacation. 

Better still, Miami can act as a gateway city to explore some of the best places in Florida. For instance, the Everglades are just a stone’s throw away. Oh, and don’t forget the beautiful islands of the Florida Keys. All within easy reach from Miami itself. 

so, to help you make the most out of your visit to Miami, I’m sharing my top places for you to get the most out of your trip. Have an amazing time in Miami. 

1.) South Beach

When you think of Miami, an image of the ever-famous South Beach probably comes to mind, right? It’s probably the East Coast’s most iconic beach and one that’s incredible to visit. 

With its beautiful turquoise waters and silky smooth beaches, it’s the perfect place to start your day, especially if you get up early to watch the sunrise.

Now, a heads up, South Beach does draw a large crowd. Though don’t let that put you off, you can still find quieter parts of the beach that are just perfect for a chilled afternoon. 

Not only that, it’s one of the hotspots for fun things to do in Miami that has heaps of bars and restaurants, too. For a pretty lively afternoon, head over to Wet Willie’s for their frozen cocktails. Alternatively, stop by Kantina for some of the tastiest tacos on the beachfront. 

Best of all, you will find loads of bars along Ocean Drive itself. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a day in the surf at South Beach.

2.) Art Deco District

Whether you are interested in architecture, beautiful art or just enjoying some stunning scenery, the Art Deco historic district is a must-visit when exploring Miami. 

Located near the South Beach shoreline, the unique, Art Deco buildings are unique to Miami and incredible to see. 

Now, the easiest way to see all the Art Deco buildings in Miami is by booking this Art Deco segway tour that’s so much fun. Though, be sure to book these tickets in advance; they sell out fast at peak times. 

Now, you can Visit in the early evening, drop into one of the cocktail bars and enjoy the buzzing vibe of this colourful district. Just be sure to keep your eyes peeled for; The Carlyle, The Colony Hotel and The Webster. They’re iconic. 

3.) Little Havana

Miami is home to a large Cuban community that has brought so many influences from the island of Cuba. Now, I absolutely love the neighbourhood of Little Havana and visiting is easily one of the fun things to do in Miami that’s situated between South Beach and the airport. 

Once here, make sure to spot the Calle Ocho Walk of Fame. Here, you will spot stars to famous Cuban stars that line the street,

Afterwards, head down to Tamiami Trail and stroll the streets here. Here, you’ll find the likes of the Cubaocho Museum, which tells the story of Cuba. Plus, you’ll be able to stop by El Toro Loco Churrascaria for their juicy steaks. They’re so good. 

If you want a satisfy your sweet tooth, head to one of the Cuban cafes and try Arroz con Leche (which is a sweet rice pudding). It’s so delicious, especially with a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Alternatively, head over to Azucar for their world-famous Cuban ice cream. Their café con leche and abuela maria flavours are so good. 

 

4.) Coconut Grove

Coconut Grove is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Miami, dating back to the 1800s. Located south of downtown, this area is filled with restaurants, hotels, shops, art and greenery influenced by Bahamian roots that still stand strong to this day.

This all makes a visit to Coconut Grove one of the totally fun things to do in Miami which is just south of Little Havana.  

Once here, make sure to visit the Kampong Botanical Garden, which is so lovely for a stroll. though, make sure to wear layers as it can be so humid and hot if you visit on a day with no wind. 

Afterwards, stroll up the shoreline and make your way to Monty’s. It’s a fun bayside spot that’s so much fun. Plus, their frozen Miami Vice cocktail is so good.

5.) Ocean Drive

Located in the South Beach neighbourhood, this stretch of road is great for grabbing a bite to eat, spotting all the curious and unique cars and, of course, people-watching.

It’s one of the fun things to do in Miami if you’re looking to make a night of it! You see, the whole area is filled with bars and foodie spots that’s such a vibe. 

One totally fun spot is the Palace Bar that’s so much fun. You can join one of their drag shows, grab a breakfast or lunch or just party the night away. The vibe is so welcoming and everyone is there to have a good time.

6.) Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

Although it’s technically 8 miles from Downtown Miami, Coral Gables is a beautiful place to visit, especially for Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.

This place is not your typical veggie patch that your grandad created. It’s colossal and stretches 83 acres of tropical plants ranging from rare to ubiquitous flora that can be explored on a self-guided tour or in a tram that moves around the garden.

Make sure to give yourself at least 3 hours to stroll around. It’s incredible.

7.) Key Biscayne

Key Biscayne is amazing to visit! It’s tucked away, south of Miami, on a little island that’s connected by the Rickenbacker Causeway. This all makes it easy to get to and easy to enjoy. 

For a more chilled-out day of fun, head to Key Biscayne Beach or Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. These are both stunning natural areas that are so beautiful and quite peaceful too. At the latter, you can rent a picnic pavilion for a daily fee. Plus, you anchor overnight in the State Park for only $20 per night. 

Head over to Narbona for some of the best Uruguayan food in all of Florida. It really is a great place, especially for their Chivito Uruguayo sandwich which is huge and stuffed with fillet mignon.

8.) Wynwood

If you find street art, then you need to get yourself over to Wynward in Miami. It’s incredible and one of the fun things to do in Miami if you’re very slightly north of Downtown.

Once in the area, head over to the Wynward Walls and explore this outdoor street museum. It’s all made up of colourful murals painted by artists from around the world. You won’t think of a canvas in the same way again.

Afterwards, head over to The Taco Stand that’s a grab-and-go, unfussy, spot with some of the best tacos in all of Miami. Make sure to try their carne asada taco with extra beans. Oh, and don’t forget a Quesadilla, too. They’re all delicious.

9.) Bayside Marketplace

Bayside Market has heaps of shops, restaurants and live music to keep your hips swinging in the early evening. We loved spending a few hours here and it’s so easy to get to if you’re already near Bayfront Park. 

Once here, make sure to stop off at La Industria Bakery for their bacon waffle sandwich. It’s so good. 

Oh, and don’t forget to book this speedboat tour of the city. It departs from Bayside and takes you on an exhilarating 45-minute journey all around Miami and South Beach.

It’s so much fun and departs right from the waterfront here.

10.) Venetian Pool

Over 100 years old, the Venetian Pool of Coral Gables is well worth visiting while you’re in Miami. 

Located in the Coral Gables area, this converted quarry area is a magical place to relax, stroll and, of course, go for a dip. It’s totally unique, and you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re actually in Italy. 

Now, it costs just over $20 per person; but it’s well worth it for the experience. You’ll have loads of fun. 

Afterwards, whilst in Coral Gables, you can visit Merrick House, the former home of the founder of the city. It’s well worth it if you’re familiar with the local history. Though, you might want to give it a miss if you’re not. 

11.) Vizcaya Museum

Vizcaya is an Italian Renaissance-style villa turned museum, that’s perfect to visit.

It sits on a historic estate that’s been around for over 100 years and is still in tip-top condition. Here, you can explore the gardens, enjoy the outdoor sculptures and even take a peek at the art installations indoors.

Just be sure to give yourself at least 2 hours to stroll around. It’s likely you’ll want more time, but give yourself that as a minimum. 

It’s easily one of the more fun things to do in Miami, especially if you’ve got an afternoon free.

12.) Maritime Heritage Trail (Biscayne National Park)

Located in the stunning Biscayne National Park, the Maritime Heritage Trail is an underwater archaeological site where you and explore some of the many shipwrecks and underwater ecosystems.

It’s such a beautiful coastline and well worth exploring if you’re heading for a day trip out of Miami itself.

14.) Everglades

Located just south of Miami, you can easily head to the Everglades National Park to see one of the most unique landscapes in the England. You see, this vast array of flat lands and waterways is home to some of the largest alligators in all of North America, 

To make things easy, book this Everglades tour that departs from Miami itself.  On the tour, you’ll get to explore the stunning scenery onboard an airboat, all whilst keeping your eyes peeled for the resident alligators.

15.) Versace Mansion

Once the home of the late Giovanni Versace, Villa Casa Casuarina is within the former home of this fashion icon.

Today, you can book a room and stay in this prestigious property that’s so incredible inside. alternatively, you can grab a table at Gianni’s Restaurant that’s incredible for lunch. 

Just make sure to ask for a poolside table and book your table well in advance. Tables fill up fast.
